University of Maine Women’s Soccer Almost Misses Chance to Win Title

The University of Maine women’s soccer team almost missed its chance to win the America East Conference regular season title on Sunday against Binghamton University.

The Black Bears still have a chance to win the title, but they need outside help.

Against Binghamton, Maine jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening 18 minutes and 08 seconds of play, but Binghamton rallied to tie the game at 2-2.That puts Binghamton one point ahead of Maine in the standings, and both teams will play in the final round of the tournament on Thursday night.

Maine will host third-ranked archrival New Hampshire, while Binghamton will be on the road at New Jersey Institute of Technology.

If Maine wins and Binghamton loses or draws, Maine could still win the regular season title.

Binghamton currently has 15 points and a record of 4 wins, 0 losses and 3 ties. Each win is worth 3 points and a draw is worth 1 point.

The University of Maine has 14 points and a record of 4 wins, 1 loss, and 2 ties.

The University of Maine only needs to tie the University of New Hampshire to finish second and earn the right to a first-round bye in the six-team single-elimination tournament and the right to host the semifinals.

If Maine draws and Binghamton loses, both teams will be tied on points and will go to overtime.

However, if Maine loses and Massachusetts Lowell wins at Bryant, Maine could fall to fourth place as Massachusetts Lowell and Maine would be tied on 14 points. Massachusetts Lowell would win the regular season game against Maine and therefore would win the overtime game.

In that case, Maine would host the fifth seeded team on Sunday.

New Hampshire has 12 points, Massachusetts Lowell has 11, NJIT has 10 and Bryant has eight, and the trio is vying for a top-four seed.

„The most important thing is for us to get a first or second seed so we can get a first round rotation,“ said University of Maine head coach Scott Atherley. „We have to control what we can control. Everything else is beyond our control.“

Maine, which was seeded third last year, defeated New Jersey Institute of Technology 4-1 in the quarterfinals before losing 2-1 to New Hampshire in the semifinals, with Abbey Myer scoring the game-winning goal with 4:35 left in the game. New Hampshire then beat top-seeded Binghamton in penalty kicks, but lost 2-0 to Harvard in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Atherley acknowledged that his team is fully aware of how New Hampshire ended its season last year, but said his players „have to keep their emotions in check.“

„We can’t think about last year. We have to treat it like a normal game and focus on playing to our strengths,“ he said.

The Black Bears will enter this game undefeated in 16 home games (9 wins, 0 losses and 7 ties) and it will be their first home night game of the season.

„Night games draw big crowds and everyone loves playing at night,“ Atherley said. He also added that if they can look into the crystal ball at the beginning of the season and know where they’re going to go at this time of year, they’ll be happy.

„You couldn’t have written a better script,“ he said. „It’s so exciting.“

Atherley said the game against Binghamton was one of the most evenly matched games they’ve ever seen.

Maine failed to score on its final six shots of the game.

Atherley said New Hampshire employs a more direct style of play and that the Wildcats „will try to put a lot of pressure on us.“

„They’re very aggressive on the sidelines and like to one-up each other,“ he added. „They will shoot from anywhere, so we have to do a good job of limiting their shots and defending one-on-one on the wing.“

Abby Kramer leads the University of Maine team with 11 goals and four assists, five of which are game-winning goals. From Lincolnville.
